HelloAI - Role of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare training
The strategic development of HelloAI, a leading European training program designed to bridge the AI literacy gap for healthcare professionals, initiated in 2017.

The Challenge: A Critical Gap Between Technology and Clinical Practice
In 2017, Artificial Intelligence was rapidly moving from a theoretical concept to a practical reality. Within healthcare, the potential was immense—promising to revolutionize diagnostics, personalize treatment, and streamline operations. However, a critical gap existed. The engineers developing the AI and the healthcare professionals (HCPs) expected to use it spoke different languages.
For AI to be adopted safely, effectively, and ethically, the entire healthcare workforce—from clinicians and researchers to hospital executives—needed to become AI-literate. This wasn’t just a training issue; it was the single greatest barrier to a data-driven healthcare revolution.
My Role: From Concept to Consortium
While serving as a Consortium Research Leader at GE HealthCare, I identified this systemic need for a trusted, practical, and scalable education program. My vision was to create a pan-European initiative that would demystify AI for the healthcare sector, building skills and confidence from the ground up.
To bring this vision to life, I took two key strategic actions:
- Secured Funding: I conceptualized and authored the winning funding proposal for EIT Health, a body of the European Union. This proposal articulated the urgency of the AI literacy gap and presented a clear, high-impact solution.
- Built the Coalition: With funding secured, I initiated and managed the international consortium required for success. This was not a single-company effort; it required a strategic alliance. I brought together KTH Royal Institute of Technology (for world-class academic rigor), LEITAT Technological Center (for deep research and innovation expertise), and GE HealthCare (for industry-leading clinical and market insight).
The Impact: A Global Standard for AI Literacy
This consortium launched HelloAI, a program designed to enhance the AI literacy of healthcare professionals. It evolved into a comprehensive learning path with tailored modules for different personas: Foundations (for all), Professional (for HCPs and researchers), and Executive (for decision-makers).
The program’s success has validated the initial vision. Since its 2018 launch, HelloAI has empowered over 5,000 participants from more than 70 countries, featuring insights from over 100 global experts. It has become a key enabler for digital transformation, “reskilling and upskilling” a global workforce to be confident and competent partners in the adoption of AI.
Broader Context: A Model for Strategic Change
The story of HelloAI is a powerful case study in strategic foresight. It demonstrates how to successfully launch a large-scale, international program that addresses a complex, systemic challenge.
My role was not just to manage a project, but to act as the architect and initiator. This involved:
- Identifying a high-stakes, unaddressed market need.
- Aligning diverse stakeholders (academia, research, and industry) around a common mission.
- Building the strategic case to secure competitive funding.
- Leading the consortium to translate a concept into a scalable, high-impact reality.
Building transformative educational programs in complex fields like healthcare requires this precise blend of strategic vision, coalition-building, and execution. If your organization needs to bridge a critical skills gap or launch a strategic initiative, I have the experience to help you build the bridge from concept to impact.
